Chow Tai Fook's Q4 sales propped up by mainland

Chow Tai Fook's (1929) last quarter sales rose 17.5 percent year-on-year, thanks to the contribution from the mainland while the same-store sales in Hong Kong and Macau fell 31 percent.

Retail sales value from China market accounted for 83.3 percent of the total figure and was up by 26 percent for the fourth quarter in 2020 from a year ago.

Meanwhile, sales in Hong Kong and Macau, which accounted for 16.7 percent of the company's sales, suffered a 12.5 percent decrease during the same period.

Same-store sales in the mainland grew 12.2 percent year-on-year last quarter as the Covid-19 pandemic eased.

In the mainland, same-store average selling price of gem-set jewellery was HK$7,500 last quarter, compared to HK$7,000 in the previous quarter, while the average selling price for Hong Kong and Macau jumped to HK$17,700 from HK$11,500 driven by big-ticket transactions.

The same-store average selling price of gold jewellery and products increased to HK$5,300 from the previous quarter of HK$4,400 in the mainland but declined to HK$5,700 from HK$7,400 in Hong Kong and Macau.

Meanwhile, luxury brands are increasing prices despite the pandemic, with Gucci pumping up the price of its bags from January 8 by as much as 20 percent.
