Jittima “Jan” Wattanasin, Co-Founder of Sanyaluck, Talks Jewellery and Celebrating Thai Heritage

2020年07月21日

Introducing the Mini Pa-Yan-Cha-Na collection by Sanyaluck — an ode to Thai heritage, through celebrating the intricate beauty of the Thai alphabet.

Born from a love for Thai heritage, fine-jewellery brand Sanyaluck is the brainchild of founders Jittima “Jan” Wattanasin, and Natjala “Nat” Paitoon. The brand offers a graceful selection of accessories that draw from the Thai alphabet, celebrating the distinctive charms of Thai culture with a chic and contemporary twist.

A year after the debut of their first collection — the signature ‘Pa-Yan-Cha-Na’ — Sanyaluck has returned with a new line: the Mini Pa-Yan-Cha-Na. Offering a more minimalist take on the brand’s iconic Thai font jewellery, this range of mini-sized accessories comes complete with necklaces, stud earrings, ear-cuffs, bracelets, rings, and more. All exquisitely created from quality materials, with a keen eye for detail, the resulting line is one that pays homage to hundreds of years of Thai heritage, while subtly expressing the individuality of each wearer. We had a quick chat with one of the co-founders, Jan, about her views on styling jewellery, the meaning of Thainess, and being proud of your roots.

Can you tell us more about Sanyaluck? How did the brand come about?

Well, as you know, this brand was created by me and my friend, Natjala “Nat” Paitoon. We are very close, and we’ve always liked to wear jewellery. I remember we were walking one day, and we suddenly thought that we wanted to get ourselves jewellery with Thai letters — something with our names in Thai. So we looked around, but we couldn’t find anything that was truly beautiful, and that’s when we decided to make it ourselves (laughs).

How did you get started?

At first we worked very closely with jewellery craftsmen, and we would design the letters together, but we faced quite a few issues. It was a very long and tough process, because the craftsmen specialise in jewellery and not lettering. We ended up changing how we worked, and decided to find people who specialised in making fonts. We let them create a whole new font just for us, which is why we now have a unique typeface called Sanyaluck. Then we went back to the jewellery craftsmen with this new lettering, and created jewellery out of it.

So you’re very involved in the design process behind each piece?

Yes. We didn’t only help to design the letters, but we also had to create the patterns and textures on them. Then we would discuss different colours, different materials, and even which chains we would use. Every little detail has been carefully thought out — even the specific shade of gold we have, which is this semi-matte tone. We were a part of the process every step of the way.

What would you say are the core values of Sanyaluck?

Sanyaluck began as a sort of personal project, but once we started, a lot of our friends got interested in the concept, and that’s when we decided to really do it. We started to think about how we were going to make the brand, and what we wanted out of it. The true concept became based on a love for Thai heritage. We wanted to bring out this sense of “Thainess”, but also keep things contemporary and not old-fashioned. That’s why we made certain design decisions, like having the letters slant in some areas, and using chains because they’re currently very popular. So the feel of the brand is quite fresh, new, and trendy.

“Thainess” seems to play a big part in the brand’s philosophy. Could you tell us more about this?

“Thainess” is quite a wide phrase. It’s something that can be approached in many ways, like Thai cloth, Thai craftsmanship — there are so many options. But when you really look at it, Thai letters really tell us a lot about our culture. No one else uses our alphabet — English is used in a lot of places, but Thai letters is something we created for ourselves. It’s just like how if you travel to China, you might buy an accessory with a Chinese letter on it, to bring home as a souvenir. We hope in that sense, our jewellery can also become like that in the future too.

Another big thing for Sanyaluck seems to be identity. How do you think Thai letters can help wearers bring out who they are?

Just like how Thai letters are a big part of Thai culture, our names are also a big part of who we are. With names, they come to characterise us because in a way, they belong to us. Through the Thai letters in our jewellery, our wearers can opt to have their initials, or their names personalised onto their accessories. We want, at the end of the day, for people to feel proud of the Thai alphabet, and see that they can be chic and cool as well.

Sanyaluck just released a new collection, the Mini Pa-yan-cha-na. Can you tell us more?

The Pa-yan-cha-na was our first collection — which is our signature line of Thai letters. We received a lot of good feedback for that, and wanted to make more design options for people with different preferences. So we decided to make a smaller, mini size, which is the Mini Pa-yan-cha-na. Even though the letters are similar, the feel of the collection is quite different. With the smaller size you can do something more lighthearted and playful — for example, we’ve still got earrings, but in this line the letters are cute studs which give you a rather different look.

How do you personally like to style your jewellery?

For me, it really depends on the day (laughs). I actually like things that are very minimal, but have a profound meaning behind it. Some people like to layer, and mix and match — it really depends. That’s why, even though all our jewellery pieces are minimal, they’re designed to be quite adaptable and flexible. They’re also unisex, and because everything is pre-ordered, you can opt for something that’s really suited to your preferences and needs. For example, boys might need a longer chain, or something along those lines.

What are your hopes for the future of the brand?

Hopefully, Sanyaluck can become a brand that represents our country. We want it to be the kind of brand where, if you were a tourist visiting Thailand, you’d want to buy one of our jewellery designs home as a souvenir of your travels here. Each and every piece is designed to stay with you — we don’t compromise on our quality at all. We use real silver, and 18 white-gold plated and rose gold. Everything is also handmade, so not only are we about celebrating Thai heritage through our letters, but Sanyaluck is also a celebration of Thai craftsmanship — from the design, to the making of the product itself.
