Rough Market
Russian diamond mining giant Alrosa plans to hold 34 international auctions for special size rough diamonds (weighing over 10.8 carats) in 2020, the comapany recdently announced. They plan to hold seven auctions in the first quarter (Q1), eight in Q2, seven in Q3 and 12 in Q4. The schedule is available here. These auctions are in addition to its monthly sales under the Alrosa Alliance, through which it administers long-term (three-year) supply agreements with the world's largest consumers of rough diamonds.
The largest number of auctions, eleven, will take place in Moscow, with three to be held in Vladivostok. Other tenders will take place in largest international diamond trading centers, where Alrosa has trading representative offices. The company will have three auctions in Antwerp, four in Dubai, five in Ramat Gan (Israel), four in Hong Kong and four in New York.
“Russian law stipulates that special size rough diamonds (weighing over 10.8 carats) must be auctioned. In general, such auctions attract up to 100 companies from different countries. Auction sales currently account for about 10% of our overall sales volumes”, said Evgeny Agureev, Deputy CEO of Alrosa.
