London—The Responsible Jewellery Council is inviting the trade and the public to comment as it develops a set of standards for companies that buy, sell, and make lab-grown diamonds and colored gemstones.
RJC
announced in September it had begun crafting an industry standard for manufacturers and retailers that deal in lab-grown gemstones.
Separate from RJC’s existing Code of Practices, it will aim to establish best practices for the use of lab-grown diamonds and gems in jewelry, including social, environmental, and business integrity requirements.
The council said it will be mandatory for all RJC members who handle lab-grown materials to operate according to the standard.
It expects to release the Laboratory Grown Material Standard by June 2022.
The development of the LGMS includes a minimum of two rounds of public consultations and input from the multi-stakeholder Standards Committee to ensure it sets a benchmark in the industry for best practices working with lab-grown materials.
The first round of consultation takes 60 days.
Those interested in commenting can do so on
this form until Friday, Dec. 17.
